30milesOUT.com- part1 -Blue Water Kayak Classic King Fish Tournament- Corpus Christy Texas

Today on 30milesOut I (Ty southerland) head offshore with a bunch of guys with the Houston based kayak fishing site texaskayakfisherman.com. My self and 2 buddy's headed down to corpus christy the eve before the king fish tournament. The seas were looking great. 1-2 foot sweels, super hot. I knew from experince that 1-2' seas and over 100 temp. meant that mid day the gulf would go completely flat and it did! Still and hot. Moving tide is good in this situation but we got what we got ...
This was only the second time I ever took my hobie pro angler off shore. It really is a great btb kayak.  BTB is a term used in the texaskayakfisherman.com forum. It stands for beyond the breakers. in other words kayak fishing the oil rigs and beaches along the Texas coast! As you will see in the vido there is no shortage of kayak fisherman landing large off shore fish. We usually do real well on king fish as well as cobia, snapper, grouper, Spanish mackerel occasional tarpon and more!
Tackle and rigs used in this video--- A lot of us stock up well on rat-l-traps. Nothing trolls behind a kayak better than a Bill Lewis Lures Rat-l-Trap. As u will see in part 2 of the blue water kayak classic, Dave is down to his last one. These lures get crushed, scared and cut off often! Another must have in my box for a offshore kayak trip is sabiki jigs. I keep a out 5 in the yak. They get hit by larger fish and tore up or cut off often. Sabiki jigs are great on the spot bait markers. Its like your own personal bait shop in a zip lock! I just pull up to the oil rig, drop the sabiki down to the bottom with a 1 oz weight and jig it a few times. Then I reel up a few turns and jig again. When I feel a bait fish on I wait for other bait fish to get excited and hook up as well. It's nothing to bring in 4-5 hearing, grunts or lord knows what at a time. This brings me to my third favorite thing for btb kayak fishing- the slip cork! This is the same rig used in crappie fishing etc. We use a little bit larger salt water cork and bigger bait.
The slip cork allows me to dial in the depth of the targeted fish. To start I can set the slip cork stopper at 25'. If i have no hits I can bring it up to 15'. Bam! Fish on! Now I can present my live baits at 15' from now on. King fish etc will tend to hold at a certain water
column Durring certain conditions. I tend to bring some top water pluggs like Impactlures.com just incase a feeding frenzy starts up. Ernie with Impact plugs makes them out of hard woods... this way i can cast these pluggs at a school of jacks busting bait along way away! Due to the Impact Lures hard wood weight, they throw a country mile!
Welp, thats about it. Enjoy part one of the Blue Water Kayak Classic and look out for part 2. It's killer!
